Anaerobic exercise is very intense and happens in short bursts, lasting from ten seconds up to two minutes. Anaerobic exercise uses energy fast. Typical exercises are sprinting, jumping, lifting weights, javelin or hammer throwing.

Aerobic exercise is low intensity over longer periods and uses less energy. Periods vary from two minutes to many hours in some cases. Typical aerobic activities are marathon running, jogging, swimming and even walking.
Some physical activities, usually team games, use anaerobic and aerobic activities, switching from one to the other, like football, hockey or netball.
